What is Risperdal?
Manufactured and marketed by Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Risperdal (generic: risperidone) is prescribed to treat psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and behavioral problems in patients with autism. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) first approved Risperdal in 1994 for the treatment of schizophrenia. In 2006 and 2007, the administration increased the drug’s approval for use in treating other psychological disorders.
Arkansas Risperdal Lawsuit Information
Risperdal has been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons. In November 2013, Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay more than $2 billion for allegedly ‘off-label’ marketing the medication by promoting it for uses not approved by the FDA. This is the third largest pharmaceutical settlement in history. However, this is not the end of the story when it comes to Risperdal. The lawyers at Schmidt & Clark, LLP, are investigating potential lawsuits for residents of Arkansas who developed gynecomastia, tardive dyskinesia, and other serious side effects after taking Risperdal.

Risperdal Linked to Gynecomastia in Boys & Young Men
Recent studies have found that Risperdal has the potential to cause gynecomastia, or the development of male breasts, in boys and young men. Signs and symptoms of gynecomastia may include:
- Asymmetrical breast enlargement
- Swollen nipples
- Nipple discharge
- Breast tenderness
- Redness or discoloration around the nipple
Gynecomastia is an embarrassing condition that can lead to severe psychological trauma and lowered self-esteem. Some patients may even require surgery in order to remove the excess breast tissue. In less serious cases, liposuction may be all that is required to treat the condition. In other cases, however, a full mastectomy is required, which involves the complete removal of breast tissue and excess skin. In addition to the significant expense of these operations, they can also cause psychological stress and anxiety.
Research has proven that Risperdal increases levels of prolactin, a hormone that stimulates the development of breasts. As a result, boys and young men who have been exposed to Risperdal may develop male breasts with pain or nipple discharge. A 2006 study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology found that when Risperdal is taken at recommended doses, it can “strongly increase prolactin levels, with clinical consequences such as gynecomastia.”
